How to store/put away items and declutter

by Nat
(USA)

I'm 55, disabled, and homemaker, my husband is 54, also disabled, he was forced into early retirement years ago from his illness. Our income is his S.S. & a small retirement pension. We have an adult daughter who doesn't live w/us, we do have a 12yr. old 'puppy' a beagle, who stays in house, and is paper trained. Our residence is in a not that nice an area of the city, a house turned into 3 apartments ours is the upstairs '2-bedroom.' apartment. However, for us, it consists of climbing up the inside stairway, to living room, kitchen, bathroom w/shower, the clothing room, hallway/storage, that leads to my husband's office. What I'm really interested in is how to store/put away items, and declutter. I'm NOT artsy craftsy, or creative or imaginative. I've been collecting how-to books from the library on how to store items, decluttering topics, things like that etc. I'm really hoping that you'll read this and can/will help me/guide me etc.

Ideas for Decluttering and Storage
by: The Organizer

Hi Nat,

I think you will find my tips on decluttering most helpful.

I see that you ask about storing things. I encourage you to ask yourself, "What are you storing it for?" I suggest only storing the things that you will use in the future. Many mothers store "stuff" that is intended to serve as keepsakes for the kids. Your daughter is grown and it's time for her to store her own stuff. I'm sure she'll be happy to receive her keepsakes now versus you keeping them forever.

For the things that you choose to store, my tips on organizing storage areas will be helpful.
